Cypress
The Bald Cypress is a deciduous tree, generally treated as an evergreen. Round topped, it
usually grows to 50-70' tall in about 30-50 years. Its shape is broadly conical while
young, becoming flat topped at maturity. The needles are about 1/2" long and are
light green and feathery from spring until autumn which is when they become orange yellow
and fall from the tree. Old trees bear round 1" cones. Bald Cypress are hardy to Zone
5. It is vigorous in wet soil but will do well in well drained garden soil if the soil is
acid. Full sun is necessary. Leyland Cypress is one of the fastest growing of all
evergreens. It is narrow and conical with branches thickly covered by blue green foliage.
Unless pruned, the trees grow to 50-60' or more after about 30 years. Old trees bear
1" round cones. Leyland Cypress is hardy to Zone 7 and does best in full sun and
average soil.
